21 Feared Dead As Boko Haram, Nigerian Troops Battle

A local lawmaker on Thursday said that about 21 civilians were reportedly killed in a battle between the Boko Haram sect and Nigerian troops in Borno state. Vanguard reports that the fighting started at about 5:00 pm on Wednesday in Malam Fatori, a commercial hub known for fishing and farming in the remote north of Borno state near the border with Niger. According to Senator Maina Maaji Lawan the Nigerian troops initially repelled an attack on Malam Fatori by the heavily armed Boko Haram after a prolonged fight. “They pushed back the insurgents and people in the town and the soldiers thought it was over but the insurgents mobilised more men and weapons including an APC (armoured personnel carrier) and launched a renewed attack. “They overpowered the soldiers who were forced to flee.
